What
We Do
Iyengar
Yoga: Iyengar yoga is based on the teachings of living yoga
master B.K.S. Iyengar and begins with learning the art and
science of asanas, or yoga postures. The method of study
is orderly and progressive, and the postures are adjusted
to meet the physical conditions and needs of each student.
Improved strength, coordination, flexibility and an increased
sense of well-being are some of the benefits of the Iyengar
method of yoga.
Ashtanga Yoga: Through use of vinyasas or flowing movements
and deep rhythmic breathing, this yoga generates deep internal
heat and flexibility. This purifies and relaxes the nervous
system, the mind and the body.
T’ai Chi Ch’uan: T’ai Chi Ch’uan, “great polarity boxing”,
draws on the traditional Chinese Taoist beliefs in the interdependence
of yin and yang in the body and mind. T’ai Chi uses the
strength of the earth (yin) and energy (chi) of the heavens
(yang) to focus their physical and spiritual energies so
that mind and body work together to improve balance, stability,
flexibility, and skill.
Meditation: Designed to help to help others begin or strengthen
their meditation practice. We will discuss in the class
what meditation is and isn’t. The Kabbalah model will be
covered and tips will be given for an effortless continuing
meditation practice.
About Yoga Levels:
Pranayama & Meditation - Techniques for relaxing, restoring
vital energy and opening the body are used to prepare the
student for various breath techniques and meditation purposes.
.
Beginning Fundamental principles of Iyengar Yoga are taught
through alignment, posture, and breath using a variety of
basic poses. The beginning classes are for students new
to yoga or new to the Iyengar method, or who may have been
away from yoga for a while and need a refresher.
Level 1 For students who have experienced the equivalent
to at least one beginning session. The basic poses are refined,
and understanding is deepened. These students get more details
in the pose and begin to develop the subtle energy of yoga.
Level 2 This level emphasizes the further development
of stamina, strength, and energy flow. Deeper study of alignment
and form in a broader repertoire of poses will lead to greater
ease and understanding in the student’s personal practice.
More challenging poses are introduced.
Level 3 This class is for students who have completed
levels 1 & 2 and want to continue their study of yoga beyond
the basics. Level 3 classes practice a wider variety of
poses. Inversions and more challenging asanas are developed.
Deeper personal understanding is encouraged.
Level 4 This class is for students who want to deepen
their yoga experience through learning and practicing more
challenging. Poses are held longer and more detailed instruction
is given. We build on the poses practiced in all of the
previous levels and asanas Further develop headstand (sirsasana),
forearm balance (pincha mayurasana), and more challenging
back bends such as upward facing bow pose (urdhva dhanurasana).
Pranayama, meditation and the Yoga Sutras are incorporated
into classes.
